Your Next Step for Financial Planning

| May 29, 2019

Our financial worlds are busy, the decisions are many and actions are tough to take.  One of the great things about our current financial world is we have lots of options. However, with those options comes decisions. If you made the decision to start a retirement account today, where would you go? Would you look into a 401(k), Roth IRA, Traditional IRA? Maybe you are eligible for a 403(b), or 457 plan. What if your employer only has a SEP IRA available or SIMPLE IRA?  See - it’s easy, right?

Once you determine what type of account to open, now you have to determine where you go to start it. Should you go at it alone or should you ask for some help? This is why we are so woefully unprepared for retirement - too many choices means overload, and overload often means no action taken.

Solving for Your Financial Problem

Instead of worrying about the many things you should be doing financially, what if you focused on the the biggest problem you want solved right now and put all of your effort into solving that one thing? If you could wave your magical wand and make one concern go away, which would you choose? Would it be to have an emergency fund started? Would it be to make sure you are on pace for retirement? Would it be to make sure your investments are properly positioned? I believe most of our financial questions can be answered, but need an investment of time and commitment to getting it solved. There might be many ways to answer a question, but I think the one that makes the most sense is the one that works for you.

Think about it for yourself and what problem you want solved. How soon can I get out of debt? How much should I have in a savings account? How much insurance should I have? Can I buy a house? Would my family be okay if something happened to me? How much should I be saving for retirement? Which is better: A Roth or Traditional IRA? Am I going to have enough money in retirement? How can I leave a legacy to the next generation?
